The present invention provides a plastic filled wire rope. The wire rope includes a core (10) and plastic elements (16) surrounding the core. Outer strands (14) surround the plastic elements (16), and the outer strands (14) are compacted into the plastic elements (16). The plastic elements are thusly squeezed to form a plastic layer surrounding the core. The plastic layer further provides a support for the outer strands and keeps the outer strands spaced from the core and from each other.
