The optical splice having a V-groove alignment guide for butting together the ends of two optical fibres is formed by placing two glass rods together with axes parallel and surfaces touching and pulling the rods while they are heated. This produces a V-guide with curved surfaces when circular rods are used. Straight-sided V-grooves may be made by using rods of triangular or quadrilateral cross-section. Two to four rods may be used and the guide formed from the fused rods may be secured to the inside surface of a tube.
