A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition containing an optically active mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I) or (II): <IMAGE> (I) and <IMAGE> (II) wherein R1 and R2 are respectively an alkyl, and C with * represents an asymmetric carbon atom. The mesomorphic compound provides the ferroelectric liquid crystal composition with an extended operational life in a liquid crystal device.
