Bis(mercaptophenyl) ethers - from mercaptoaryl halides - and mercapto-phenols

Bis-(mercaptophenyl) ethers - mercaptoaryl halids and mercapto phenols. Diphenyl ether derivs. of formula (I) (where R1 and R2 are lower alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl and the two phenyl residues may carry further substituents) are prepd. either by reacting a corr. esp. halide of formula (II) (where Y is Cl, Br, or I) with a phenol of formula in the presenc of (a) an alkali(ne earth) metal or cpd. which dissociates alkalinely in H2O and (b) activatd copper and/or a copper salt or copper oxide, ro by reacting (II) with the alkali(ne earth) salt of (III) in th presnc of activated copper and/or a coppr salt or copper oxide. (I) are suitable as starting materials for thermostable polymers, as herbicides and insecticides, as vulcanisation accelerators, and as hydraulic and lubricant additives.
