Metal halide reduction by calcium carbide

Metal is produced by reducing at least one of its halides with CaC2, which is dissolved in at least one molten halide of an alkali(ne earth) metal. Pref. the melt is CaCl2 with 10% and is not >25% NaCl, or a mixture of CaCl2 and MgCl2. The pressure is 15-4 to 10-2 atm. at 800-1200 C, and Na is produced. MgCl2 is reduced at 10-2 - 1 atm. at 800-1200 C to produce Mg.
