PURPOSE:To increase light using efficiency by using a collimator means having optical characteristics such as anisotropy in a plane perpendicular to the light advancing direction, and making elliptical the cross-section of light beams which irradiate a light valve. CONSTITUTION:Divergent light of a light source 1 from a reflector 2 is supplied via a cylindrical lens 3 to a cylindrical lens 4 larger than the lens 3. As the result, the cross-section of light 5 obtained from the lens 4 becomes elliptical. Therefore, when a rectangular liquid crystal light valve of a greater aspect ratio such as a liquid crystal light valve made for high-vision is used, the mismatch of the cross-section of light beams to the shape of the liquid crystal light valve is reduced, light losses are also reduced and the light using efficiency is increased. |
