Prodn. of a blacking material comprises treating chitosan (1) with the colouring matter of lithospermum root. From a water-insol. chitosan and a gel-form chitosan a fine particulate blacking material and a gel-form blacking material are produced, respectively, when a water-soluble chitosan or a chitosan oligosaccharide, D-glucosamine, or an inorganic or organic salt of these is used, a liq. blacking material is obtd. The colouring treatment is carried out in the presence of water-soluble Na salts, K salts, Mg salts, Ca slats, Ba salts, Zr salts, Fe salts, Ni salts, Al salts or silicates. The fine particulate blacking material is produced by contacting the gel-form blacking material with an alkaline aq. soln. or by pulverising a thin black film formed from the gel-form blacking material. A fine particulate blacking material is produced by dyeing a natural or synthetic polymer material with the gel-form or the liq. blacking material in the presence of the water-soluble salts. The black iron oxide can be dyed by fixing the gel-form or liq. blacking material on its surface in the presence of the water-soluble salts.
