The oscillatory circuit comprises a capacitor (31) in parallel with a coil (29), slipped over the insulating sleeve (14) within which (just below the coil) the rod is divided by an air-gap (16). It is connected, in series with the scintillator (30), across the gap. The outer metal case (9) is connected with the rod only at the top (6) and carries a collector disk (21). Charge build-up on the disk (opt. externally applied DC voltage) causes scintillator gap break-down, so activating the oscillatory circuit and producing ionisation oat the rod tip (1). |
