The beam (F) is deflected by a first mirror (4) whose position is selectively adjustable (6, 7) to a second mirror (8) which preferably has a parabolic surface (9). From the second mirror (8) the beam is directed to a third, flat mirror (12) whose position is also adjustable (14, 15) so that the beam is focussed on the region (P) to be treated in a position substantially in alignment with the initial direction (X1) of propagation. Improvements (19) in the system for supplying screening gas to the region (P) under treatment are also described.
