The present invention relates to 7H-benzo[b]pyrazino[1,2-d]pyrrolo[3,2,1-jk][1,4]benzodiazepines of the formula <CHEM> wherein R is hydrogen, loweralkyl, or a group of the formula COO(CR<1>Z)mCR<2>R<3>R<4>, wherein R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, and R<4> are independently hydrogen or loweralkyl, Z is hydrogen, loweralkyl, or halogen, and m is 0 or 1; X and Y are independently hydrogen, halogen, loweralkyl, or trifluoromethyl; the dotted line represents an optional carbon-tocarbon bond; an optical isomer thereof, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, which are useful for treating depression alone or in combination with inert adjuvants. The invention relates also to a process and intermediates for the preparation of the above compounds.
