Device for stabilizing a ladder

A device for use in stabilizing an inclined ladder comprises a base member having an upstanding wall portion (15) on which a ladder support member (18) is swivellably mounted by studs (20) which extend through inclined slots and which is clamped by nuts on studs (20), said ladder support member (18) being provided with means for securing the ladder, which may be a pulley or guide (23) and a jamming cleat (27) through which extends a cord (24) provided with a hook (25) which can engage with a rung of a ladder to hold the ladder on the support member (15); and thus the ladder support member (18) can be positioned and clamped in a horizontal position when the base member (10) rests on an inclined surface.
