An apparatus and method for making flat plates of GRP or other heat-curable material. Upper and lower plates (12, 18) define the top and bottom surface of the plate and an separate annulus (14) defines the shape of the perimeter. Layers of e.g. GRP are built up in the hollow interior (16) between the plates (12, 18) and the annulus (14). Pressure may be applied to the plates (12, 18) to aid dispersion of resin through the glass fibre, and heat from e.g. a liquid contained in the bed (24) of the support structure (10) of the apparatus may be applied to the plate. Pressure can be applied using a vacuum system, wherein a cover (20) forming part of a sealed enclosure is placed over the upper sheet (18) and air is evacuated from the enclosure (24).
