Preparing magnesium phosphide, Mg3P2. - Effected by the action of red phosphorus and magnesium in the presence of a "light" or "very light" grade of inert substance such as MgO, MgCO3, CaCO3, Mg stearate or Cu stearate. - The inert substance has a density below 350 g/litre. - Alternatively, inert substance may be a paraffin oil, opt. in presence of inert solid. - The reactants mixed in stoichiometric ratio and 5-60%, pref. 10-30% inert substance added. Initiated by electric or other ignition. - Fumigating agent for cereals and foodstuffs since, on contact with atmospheric moisture, it liberates phosphine. - The reaction is controllable and the product is esp. suitable for fumigation purposes.
