[Also in Divisions B2 and B8] A method for forming holes in a workpiece, such as a watch jewel, comprises coating at least one face of the workpiece with an organic agent prior to contact of the workpiece with a laser-beam in order to prevent fusion of the workpiece material ejected in the liquid state with an outer face of the workpiece during the boring operation. One or both faces may be coated with the agent which is changed during the boring operation to form a non-adhering intermediate layer by the eject material, the latter thus being readily removable from the surfaces of the workpiece. Apparatus for applying the coating comprises an adhesive band 4 of, for example, rubber guided over rollers 1a-1d, and a smooth band 5 of, for example, soft P.V.C. guided over rollers 2a-2e, both bands running together over a drum 3. Workpieces are fed from a hopper 11, vibrator 12 and magazine 13 to the band 5 and pass beneath a nozzle 9 which coats one side of the workpiece which is then carried over the drum and along band 4 beneath a second nozzle 10 which coats the other side of the workpiece. A stripper 14 removes the workpiece for transfer to the laser-beam device. In another embodiment, the bands are guided so as to be spaced apart a distance less than the thickness of the workpiece.</p> |
