PRODUCTION OF SULFUR-CONTAINING ALIPHATIC CARBOXYLIC ACID ESTER AND ITS ACID

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance useful as an agent for hair, drug intermediate, etc., in high yield and in high purity by reacting a water-insoluble halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acid ester with an aqueous solution of a sulfide in a water-insoluble solvent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A water-insoluble compound shown by formula I or formula II (X is Cl or Br; R<1> is 3 to 18C alkyl; R<2> and R<3> are H or 1 to 4C alkyl; (n) is 1 to 3) is reacted with an aqueous solution of a sulfide in a water-insoluble solvent (e.g. benzene) in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g. quaternary phosphonium salt or pyridinium salt) at 0 to 150 deg.C for 1 to 2 hours to give a compound such as a compound shown by formula III or formula IV. The water-insoluble halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acid ester is obtained as a reaction product in azeotropic dehydration of a halogenated aliphatic carboxylic acid and >=3C alcohol in the water-insoluble solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst and the reaction product is used as it is. In the abovementioned method, the solvent and the catalyst can be reused and waste water is readily treated.
