A reinforcing agent for incorporation into castable mixts. which subsequently harden into building materials, comprising a multiplicity of bundles of oblong steel wire cuttings having a thickness of 0.3-1.5 mm, a max. length of 120 mm and a length/thickness ratio of 40-120, held into a bundle with a water-insoluble binder which is meltable and has a softening temp. of 40-170. The water-insoluble metable binder is e.g. a thermoplastic (co)polymer such as ethylene-vinyl acetate or polyester-polyurethane adhesive (e.g. as described in US2801648) or a bitumen.
