Emergency reactor shut down and test system - for water-cooled nuclear reactors

Each individual control rod actuator in the water cooled nuclear reactor includes an emergency shut down hydraulic ram for whose propulsion a volume of water is contained in a hollow jacket around the actuator and which is pressurized from a high pressure source under control of an emergency shut down control valve in the pressure manifold to a distributor system. A test valve is placed on the high pressure side of the control valve and when the test valve is closed, a small volume only of gas at working pressure is introduced into the system and in conjunction with pressure gauges at the valves, the system is tested for water leaks i.e. the safety of the system is checked without full shut down and loss of output.
