PURPOSE: To provide an electrolytic capacitor, which has a long service life and generates little or no gas by using a solution prepared by dissolving boric acid or a specific amine in a mixture of polyalkylene glycol and containing noα-hydroxy carboxylic acid as the electrolyte of the capacitor. CONSTITUTION: The electrolyte of an electrolytic capacitor is composed essentially of a solution prepared by dissolving boric acid and an amine, having a molecular weight not greater than 175 in the mixture of a large quantity of one component selected from among a group composed of butyrolatone, dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide, or the mixture of dimethylacetamide and dimethylformamide and a small quantity of polyalkylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 2,000 or smaller, without mixingα-hydroxy carboxylic acid including citric acid in the electrolyte. The amount of the boric acid is adjusted to about 2mol per mol of polyalkylene glycol and amine.
