The distance gauging system uses a standard visual pattern (7) attached to each viewed object (6), which can be assessed by the driver of an approaching vehicle to determine the distance of the object (6). Pref. further visual patterns (5) are attached to distance posts (4) at defined intervals along the vehicle route (1). This provides a reference for comparison with the visual pattern (7) attached to the viewed object (6) e.g. a pedestrian. Each visual pattern (5,7) pref. has a bright coloured and/or reflective and/or luminous characteristic. USE - For increased pedestrian safety at night.
