The present invention relates to a method and system for processing a video composite signal. The system is characterised in that it comprises essentially two circuits 7; 8 for detecting two voltages, maximum and minimum respectively, taken by a video signal during one frame and two memories 9; 10 holding, during the frame in progress, the maximum and minimum voltage values detected during the previous frame and an operator circuit 6 whose transfer function uses the two aforesaid stored values to produce a maximum contrast in the luminance signal of the frame in progress. The invention finds an application in industrial vision systems. <IMAGE>
