The machine (10) for comminuting stalks during the harvesting of e.g. maize, cotton, sunflowers or beans, has at least one knife (14) rotating in a horizontal or near-horizontal plane, and at least one guide shaft (16) with a passage (28) open at top and bottom, and walls (18). The stalks are conveyed into the passage during the harvesting process. There is at least one bar (20) acting as a counter to the knife at the lower edge of one of the walls (18) which extends into the passage and into the field of action of the knife (14). USE/ADVANTAGE - The device is simple, takes the stalks reliably, and makes possible a clean energy-saving cut.
