A setting defice for setting cartridges of clip fasteners has an oscillating guide piston (10) which moves from its rest position to repeatedly hit successive clips (2) which are fed to its at right angles through aghe guide rail (24). The piston has a pin (15a) projecting from it at right angles, which slides along a helical groove in a superimposed sleeve to an end stop (20,21). After striking the back of the clip it returns to its rest position. USE/ADVNATAGE - Unlikely to jam because the piston turns as well as sliding axially.
