The description relates to a composition for treating water containing metal ions and possibly additional organic and/or inorganic impurities which is obtainable by the conversion of sulphur with an alkaline and/or alkaline earth hydroxide in the presence of water. The composition of the invention may be used together with an inorganic compound containing a polyvalent cation and is added to the water to be purified containing soluble metal ions and possibly organic and/or inorganic impurities, whereby the pH is set to values ranging from 2 to 12.
