A machine for shearing V shaped notches in the edges of steel plates has a frame (4) which supports a sliding ram (16). The ram head (22) slides on a guide pillar (32) which is inclined at an angle (WI) to the vertical. The ram head (22) is of triangular form with the guide bushes (34) near the base of the triangle. The cutting edges (24) are fixed to the other two sides of the triangle and abut against each other at the apex (40). The cutting edges (24) are relieved at in angle, which is greater than the angle (W1) whilst the fixed blade of the shearing machine is relieved at a slightly greater angle than the cutting edges (24) to ensure that there is no interference between the moving and fixed blades.
