ATTENUATOR FOR A LASER BEAM

An improved attenuator for a laser beam produced by a high-performance laser comprises a diffraction element which, in an attenuating position, extends transversely to the direction of the laser beam and is irradiated by the laser beam. The diffraction element extends beyond the laser beam in said direction so that only a partial region of the diffraction element can continuously be moved in this direction by a drive so that the laser beam continuously irradiates alternating partial regions of the diffraction element.
