<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for pigments and dyes in high yield and purity by easy and economical means, by reacting a mixture of beta-naphthol potassium with beta-naphthol with CO2 is a specific reaction medium. CONSTITUTION:beta-Naphthol potassium and beta-naphthol, preferably at a molar ratio of 1:(0.01-5), are reacted with carbon dioxide to give a 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3- carboxylic acid. In the process, the liquid mixture is reacted under the reaction conditions consisting of an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic ether, e.g. light oil, kerosine or mono- or di- or polyalkylnaphthalene, as a reaction medium at 180 deg.C or above, preferably 230-300 deg.C, and >=1kg/ cm<2>, preferably >=15kg/cm<2>. The solvent is preferably used in an amount of 0.5-10 times that of the beta-naphthol potassium.</p> |
