A steering column assembly for a vehicle includes a steering column (8), a stationary bracket (2) and a guide member which allows the steering column to be displace horizontally in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Electric motor (36) rotates screw rod (22) through gears (28, 30, 32, 34). This rotation translates nut member (38) which is fixed to steering column (8) through brackets (56, 58). The steering column is held during its horizontal movement by sliders (80) in bracket (84) and by mover (66) on slide rod (60).
