Recharg eable fuel cell comprises separate H2/O2 fuel cells and electrolysis cells, both containing hydrogen electrodes, oxygen electrodes, electrolyte and a water storage region either at the hydrogen or oxygen electrodes. The oxygen electrodes are connected via an oxygen storage region and the hydrogen electrode via hydrogen storage thus the reactive gases are readily transferred. Discharge of the fuel cell causes dilution of electrolyte which expands into the water storage matrix. The equilibrium water vapour pressure increases and water is transferred to the electrolyte of the electrolysis cell. A similar transfer occurs when electrolysis to regenerate H2 and O2 increases the electrolyte concentration. The use of separate cells permits optimisation of materials and operation mode, the transfer of gases and water requires no moving parts and the whole system can be hermetically sealed.
|
