PURPOSE:To obtain nitrobenzenes useful as a raw material for dye, drugs, agricultural chemicals in high yield by using a partially neutralized salt of heteropoly acid showing high activity and high selectivity as a catalyst and nitrating benzenes with nitric acid in a gas phase. CONSTITUTION:A partially neutralized salt of heteropoly acid which contains at least one element selected from a group consisting of phosphorus, silicon and arsenic as a central atom, at least one atom (except vanadium alone) selected from a group consisting of molybdenum, tungsten and vanadium as a coordination atom and at least one cation selected from a group consisting of potassium, rubidium, cesium, thallium, ammonium and cations of nitrogen- containing heterocyclic compounds as a counter cation is used as a catalyst and benzens are nitrated with nitric acid in a gas phase to give nitrobenzenes. In this method, deterioration of activity of catalyst is hardly seen and nitrobenzenes are obtained selectively and in high yield for a long period of time.
