The invention provides a method for selectively removing or controlling concentrations of toxic gas components within cigarette smoke by utilizing as a filter element, the product of a filter rod-making apparatus, using as garniture feed, at least one polyolefin-containing substrate characterized in that said substrate is treated with an effective amount of at least one active modifier component comprising at least one member selected from sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide, dissolved or dispersed in a nonionic spin solution. |
