PURPOSE:To eliminate the generation of a reverse twist orientation defect and to obtain a uniform and stable orientation and a high display performance by specifying a ratio obtained by dividing an inter-substrate distance with the natutal pitch of a chiral nematic liquid crystal material, and critical surface energy of the surface of a spacer. CONSTITUTION:A distance (d) between substrates 3, 4 is <=10mum, and a liquid crystal material 9 is provided with a liquid crystal cell having the torsion of an angle of 180 - 270 deg. between the substrates, and a driving circuit 14 for bringing this liquid crystal cell to multiplex driving. Also, a radio d/p obtained by dividing the inter-substrate distance (d) by the natural pitch (p) of a chiral nematic liquid crystal material 9 is set to 0.3 - 0.5, and also, the critical surface energy of the surface of a spacer 8 is set to <=30dyn/cm. In such a manner, even if d/p of a supertwist type liquid crystal display device is made small, a reverse twist orientation defect is not generated, and a liquid crystal display device having the uniform and stable orientation and the high display performance is obtained. |
