The handling/rolling device is used to raise one end of a container and to hold it in the raised position during a manoeuvre or movement of the container. The device comprises a chassis 6, a running carriage 14, 15 for supporting the chassis on the ground and allowing the chassis to pivot with respect to the ground about a first axis into a tilted position in which a first end 10 of the chassis is adjacent with the ground. A carriage 8 can move on the chassis by means of a thrust cylinder 26b. An apron (plate) 9 can be attached removably to a face of the container and pivots with respect to the carriage 8 about a second axis 10. A bar 24 causes the apron 9 to pivot with respect to the chassis when the thrust cylinder moves the carriage along the chassis between an advanced position in which the second axis 10 is adjacent to the first end of the chassis, and a retracted position in which the second axis 10 is moved towards the other end of the chassis so that the displacement of the carriage along the chassis raises the container, returns the chassis to the raised position, and causes the chassis to penetrate under the container.
