The separation device allows individual plates of varying size to be removed from a number of stacks supported vertically one above the other. It uses a horizontal support fork (8) mounted on a fork lift truck, with a telescopic outrider (9) displaced vertically relative to the fork (8), having a detector (13) which indicates its position relative to the stack from which a plate is to be separated. The free end of the outrider (9) has a suction gripper (16) for removing the top plate from the stack. Pref. the position detector (13) uses an IR beam which is reflected from the top plate in the stack. USE - For collation of several plates of differing size.
