A key has a socket which opens upward into which a ram can be inserted. The ram has spring-loaded catches which engage with impact surfaces and maintain the ram in a rest position. Damping springs mounted on the ram co-operate as flexible tongues with corresponding limit stops projecting from the socket in the path of motion of the ram. When the ram is in the rest position, the damping springs are pressed against the corresponding limit stops and deformed. The deformation of the damping spring damps the lifting movement of the key ram, thereby deadening the noise of impact.
