The efficiency optimisation system uses detection and evaluation of engine knock, to allow operation of the engine close to the knock limits, with monitoring of the air filling of the working vol. the engine and adjustment of the ignition angle. Pref. the knock signal is provided by a pressure sensor incorporated in one of the engine cylinders coupled to a high-pass filter for extracting the high frequency component from the sensor output signal, with evaluation of the knock signal within a given crankshaft angle window.
