The thickeners which are known and necessary for optimum applicational properties of aqueous surfactant formulations have disadvantages with respect to preparation and activity. Thus, for example, polyether esters can only be prepared under reduced pressure, elevated temperature and long reaction times. Electrolytes, for example, only have a thickening action when used in very high concentrations. The novel thickeners do not have these disadvantages. The use as thickeners of products of the reaction of a polyanhydride containing at least 2 anhydride functions with polyglycol ethers of the formula R-O(CHR1-CHR2-O)xH is proposed. These thickeners have a thickening action even when used in concentrations of from 1 to 5% and can be prepared under mild conditions.
