Cables are powder coated by transporting the cable through a current of powder generated by acoustic vibrations. The apparatus comprises a vessel (3) for receiving the coating material through which the cable (1) is transported, acoustic sources in the form of loudspeakers (6, 6') being arranged at the side walls of the vessel. A closing element (5) is arranged at the top of the vessel (3) for resiliently following pressure changes occurring in the interior of the vessel (3), the closing element (5) having a lower resistance against the current of the coating material than the resistance of the transporting means (2) including the cable to be coated.
