PURPOSE:To obtain a carrier enabling high-density mass-culture of anchorage- dependent cell by coating the surface of a specific foamed polyurethane with a water-insoluble polymer containing polymerizable monomer as constituent unit and optionally chemically bonding a specific functional group to the polymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective cell culture medium is produced by coating the surface of a foamed polyurethane having average pore diameter of 1 to 3mm with a water-insoluble polymer containing polymerizable monomer as constituent unit and optionally chemically bonding a positively chargeable functional group to the water-insoluble polymer. The void ratio of the foamed polyurethane in the obtained carrier is 60 to 99%. For impregnating and coating the polymerizable monomer to the foamed polyurethane, the polymerizable monomer component and the diluent used in the process are preferably good solvents to the polyurethane. Suitable polymerizable monomer is hydrophilic monomer, especially a vinyl monomer giving a polymerized polymer causing little non- specific adsorption of protein, etc. Representative examples of the monomer are (meth)acrylic acid ester and (meth)acrylamide. |
