PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an epoxy resin hardener at a low cost without producing by-products by heating a mixture containing 4-methyl- <4>-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and 4-methyl- <3>-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of a basic catalyst under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by heating (usually at 80 to 300 deg.C, preferably 100 to 200 deg.C) a mixture of structural isomers containing 4-methyl- <4>-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and 4-methyl <3>-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of a basic catalyst under a pressure of >=1kg/cm<2>. The basic catalyst is hydroxide of an alkali metal (e.g. Na), tert.-amine (e.g. N,N-diethylaniline), etc., and its amount is 0.01 to 5wt.%, especially 0.01 to 2wt.% based on the above mixture of structural isomers. The reaction pressure is preferably >=5kg/cm<2>, especially >=8kg/cm<2>. |
