Transfer grab tongs for transferring drilling rods and other corresponding rod-like workpieces from a storage means to point of use and back and for simultaneous opening and closing of the locking mechanism for the piece at the point of use. In this connection, the arrangement moves between a rest position inside the workpiece magazine and an operating position at the point of working. The arrangement 1 has a pivotably articulated lower jaw 2 and a rectilinearly movable upper jaw 3, the upper jaw 3, during movement into its intermediate position or from its intermediate position C, pressing by means of surfaces 6, 8, which slide against one another and are inclined in relation to the direction of movement T, P of the upper jaw, the lower jaw into its closed position or, respectively, allows it to open from its closed position D, in which the workpiece is pressed between the jaws.
