PRODUCTION OF HALOGEN-CONTAINING IMIDE COMPOUND

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound excellent both in flame retardance and in heat and light resistance in high yield by reacting a specific acid anhydride with an isocyanate compound in the presence of a quaternary phosphonium compound catalyst in an inert solvent. CONSTITUTION:An acid anhydride (e.g. tetrabromophthalic anhydride) expressed by formula I (R1 is aromatic nucleus or alicyclic nucleus containing Br, Cl, F or I) is reacted with an isocyanate compound (e.g. hexamethylene diisocyanate) expressed by formula II (R2 is aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon; (n) is 1 to 4) in the presence of a quaternary phosphonium compound (e.g. triphenylbenzylphosphonium chloride) which is a catalyst in an inert solvent to afford a halogen-containing imide compound expressed by formula III. The resultant compound is simultaneously capable of imparting flame retardance to combustible substances and having high heat and light resistance.
