1281287 Preparing nickel powder MONTECATINI EDISON 13 May 1970 [19 May 1969] 23263/70 Heading C7D Fine spheroidal metallic Ni powder having a particle size of less than 1 micron is prepared by heating a suspension of bis-acrylonitrile -Ni (prepared from Ni-carbonyl and acrylonitrile) in a liquid aromatic or (cyclo)- aliphatic hydrocarbon or alkanol e. g. methanol at 100-200‹C. The heated suspension may be brought into contact with pressurized H 2 to hydrogenate organic impurities in the powder. The powder produced may be separated, e. g. from methanol and prophylamine (formed by hydrogenation of acrylonitrile), and dried, and then heated to 200-300‹C. in a H 2 stream, or partially oxidized at ambient temperatures to an atmosphere containing 3-5% O 2 to reduce pyrophoricity.
