The invention relates to a hitching device with a retractable ball for motor vehicles. The ball-carrying element 4 is mounted so that it can slide and be orientated with respect to its fixing fixture 2; the means allowing the ball-carrying element 4 to occupy several radial positions which are predetermined with respect to the fixing fixture 2 also allow this element to occupy several combined predetermined longitudinal positions with respect to the said fixing fixture 2; the device, which retransmits to the fixing fixture 2 the loads exerted on the hitching ball 5 by the hitched vehicle, includes a heel 22 with flats 7, being inserted in a rectangular mortice 19 made in the rear face of the fixture 2 when the flats 7 are oriented parallel to the sides of the mortice 19, and a transverse pin 6. <IMAGE>
