PURPOSE:To obtain enough performances of a medium for recording, reproducing and erasing and to improve the contrast, response and cycle properties by forming an undercoat layer having perpendicular orientation. CONSTITUTION:The medium consists of a transparent substrate 1, undercoat layer 2 having perpendicular orientation and excellent durability formed on the substrate, and a recording layer 3 comprising thermotropic liquid crystal and dye which absorbs laser light. The transparent substrate 1 is made of glass, PMMA, polycarbonate, epoxy, etc. The undercoat layer 2 is a perpendicularly oriented film of polymer compd. or such a film can be used that can be parpendicularly oriented by rubbing with a cloth or by other methods. The medium thus obtd. is an erasable optical recording medium with good performances for recording, reproducing and erasing and excellent properties of reflectance change (contrast), responsiveness and repititive characteristics. |
