An optical storage medium (2) is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment a substrate (4) is provided with an expansion layer (6). A retention layer (10) is provided opposite the substrate (4). A liquid reflective layer (8) is provided adjacent the retention layer (10), either adjacent to or opposite the expansion layer (6). The reflective layer (8) is enclosed by a protective layer (12). Improved expansion (6) and retention layers (10) are also disclosed.
