A process and apparatus for the finish machining of the tooth surfaces of cylindrical gears by hob peeling has the right and left tooth surfaces produced by separate machining operations to produce tooth modifications e.g. crowning due to the machine executing a change of centre difference and/or a change in the additional rotation of the work piece (10) relative to the tool (9) depending on the axial displacement of the carriage (3). During the axial displacement of the carriage (3), one or simultaneously several of a number of adjustment parameters which include centre difference (a), eccentricity (e) of the tool, pivoting angle (E) and reduced lead (p) and which describe the additional rotation are changed automatically in such a manner that distortion of the work piece tooth surfaces arising from the creation of the tooth modifications is compensated for.
