A METHOD AND A DEVICE FOR HANDLING TRANSPORT CONTAINERS, PARTICULARLY GAS CYLINDERS

For the lifting of gas cylinders or similar upstanding cylindrical containers (9) use is made of a gripping device (1) having opposite, freely downwardly projecting gripping arms (5), which are forced together for clamping the container between clamp members (8) at the lower ends at the gripping arms. These are arranged entirely within a space (15) confined by two mutually orthogonal tangential planes (16, 17) of the container, whereby the containers can be gripped even when they are closely juxtaposed or placed closely against a wall surface, e.g. a side wall of a truck body. The gripping device may have more sets of gripping arms (5) for simultaneous gripping of a number of containers.
