PURPOSE: To reduce fog and to improve photographic performance by causing octahedral crystals to be formed at the time increasing pAg of at least once in a stage of precipitation and keeping its value during all the precipitation stage. CONSTITUTION: The octahedral crystals are caused to be formed by increasing pA at least once in a stage of precipitation by at least 1.5 units per at least 10 weight% units of the total amount of the silver salt to be used in the precipitation stage and keeping its value during all the precipitation stage, thus permitting the obtained photographic performance to be improved by reducing dependence ofγvalue and Dmax on a development processing time and a fog value.
