A raking machine for tapping metal from a furnace has tandem construction. The machine has two independent units which together form a raking machine and manipulator. Both units are mounted on a track and can be moved axially relative to the furnace by integral motors. A rod is moved by the raking machine and is supported and guided by the manipulator which can vary the horizontal and vertical position of the rod relative to the initial axial location. When the raking machine is moved forward the rod enters the furnace and breaks up the solid material by agitation. Special tools can be attached to the manipulator for furnace cleaning or for locking the furnace door. USE/ADVANTAGE - For tapping metal from furnaces, in partic. carbide furnaces. The equipment can use heavy tools which are quickly exchangeable with few problems. Binding of the heavy tools is considerably reduced.
