A document image is input to an image input unit (10) as a set of pixels having predetermined density values. Cells corresponding to the input pixels are engraved on the printing plate by a stylus (32) which is vibrated by a drive device (33) to scan the printing plate being controlled by a scanning mechanism (31). Functions (A, B, C, D) are prepared to convert the density values for the pixels into cell width that represent the sizes of cells to be engraved, and cell width values are generated that correspond to density values obtained in the image input unit. The stylus engraves the cells that correspond to the generated cell width values. The document image is processed in divided image regions (A0, A1, A2), and the conversion for the pixels in a different image region is carried out using a different function. For the character and solid-type image regions, new unique functions (B, D) are adapted so that a more vivid image can be obtained. |
